A Study on the Phytoplankton Distribution in the Keum River

Abstract
To clarify the phytoplankton distribution effected by the waste water of sugar manufacturing factory.
This research was carried out at six sampling places in the Keum River during the period from March 8 to April 25, 1976. The results obtained are as follows;
1. Water temperature was 8.6¡13.5¡É (March 8-March 9) 8.0¡12.5%¡É (March 25-March 28) and 16.0¡19.0¡É (April 25).
2. At the sampled places, the pH value ranges from 7.2 to 7.6 except 7m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate where it was 6.5¡6.8.
3. BOD was generally high; 6.8¡43.2mg/§¤, especially 300mg/§¤ at 7 m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate. But Ban Jeon was not above the BOD criterion of the source of drinking water which was 4.0mg/§¤.
4. At all places Cl??? was in the range of 14.2¡34.0 mg/§¤ except 7 m down flow from Nang Chung flood-gate where it was 56.7¡78.0mg/§¤.
5. COD was 451mg/§¤ at 7 m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate, and 223.8mg/§¤ at Nang Chung stream, but 13.2¡56.1mg/§¤ in other sampling places.
6. At 7m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate where BOD was 300.0 mg/§¤, dominant species were Aphanocapsa rivularis, Microcystis aeruginosa and Oscillaterria sp. belonging to Cyanophyta, Synedra ulna belonging to Chrysophyta and Euglena sp. belonging to Euglenophyta.
At Nang Chung stream where BOD was 146.0mg/§¤, dominant species were Microystis aeruginosa belonging to Cyanophyta. Coscinodiscus lacustris and Nitzschia acicullaris belonging to Chrysophyta, and Spirogyra sp. and Schroederia setigera belonging to Chlorophyta, At the mixing place of Nang Chung stream with the Keum River where BOD was 7.0¡43.2mg/§¤, dominant species were Coscinodiscus lacustris, Asterionella formosa, Melosira distans and Nitzschia acicullaris belonging to Chrysophyta, and Schroederia setigera belonging to Chlorederia setigera belonging to Chlorophyta.
At the Ban Jeon were BOD was 2.3¡8.0mg/§¤, dominant species were Asterionella formosa. Coscinodiscus lacustris, Melosira italica belonging to Chrysophyta and Spirogyra sp. and Schroederia setigera belonging to Chlorophyta.
7. The results of biological water analysis were as follows; 7m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate was from ¥â-polysaprobic to ¥á-polysaprobic.
Nang Chung stream was from ¥á-mesosaprobic to ¥â-polysaprobic, the mixing places of Nang Chung stream with Keum River, Yong Doo and 50 m stream from the mixing places of Nang Chung stream with the Keum River were from ¥â-mesosaprobic to ¥á-mesosaprobic. Ban Jeon was from Oligosaprobic to ¥â-mesosaprobic.
8. Aphanocapsa rivularis and Microcystis aeruginosa belonging to Cyanophyta, and Euglena sp. belonging to Euglenophyta were dominant at 7 m down flow from Nang Chung flood gate, and they seem to adjust to the waste water of sugar manufacturing factory.
